"And when you process them you, what? Reach some conclusion about me?" Boothill eyed him warily. "I can tell that you're…excited." One of Aventurine's brows twitched. He'd probably guessed that the word Boothill'd avoided was nervous, but he didn't call his bluff. "I'm trashin' it near as fast as it comes in, but-" "It's fine." Aventurine's breathing was up. "Of course I'm excited, look at you, you're so..." An almost panicky look darted across his face, like he'd cornered himself. Without much in the way of conviction, he finished, "Sexy?"

Aventurine's expression changed and his posture shifted. He leaned towards Boothill and dropped his voice low, "Are there...other activities you still do?" "What, like takin' a dump?" "Uh, no."

Aki didn't seem to notice, he just rolled his eyes at Shinjiro and said, "Fine, if that's how you want to play it." He knelt down and bent forwards, revealing that the zipper in the back couldn't make it up past his ribcage, then straightened, holding Shinjiro's slippers out with two hands. "Here you go, Master 💖” "How are you doing that with your mouth?"

Heartburn, Nora Ephron - i’m so in love w the style. breezy, biting, genuinely funny When You Are Engulfed in Flames, David Sedaris - the way the stories unspool it feels like Sedaris is sitting down for a chat w you I Have Some Questions for You, Rebecca Makkai - impeccable style, amazing use of direct address, AND a good mystery Prodigal Summer, Barbara Kingsolver - really lush, sensory experience, & lovingly written characters The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson - occasionally genuinely scary, always thrilling Running in the Family, Michael Ondaatje - dreamy drift between fiction & nonfiction. no one does it like ondaatje Honourable Mentions: Grief is for People, Sloane Crosley - gut-wrenching and funny Cue the Sun!, Emily Nussbaum - great intro to the history of reality TV Trouble, Lex Croucher - fun queer regency romance Consider This, Chuck Palahniuk - useful writing advice, great rec lists, lovely tribute to his teacher Stable Strategies & Others, Eileen Gunn - incredible range & delightful story notes Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow - not friends, not lovers, but a 3rd thing (collaborators)
