CAM #photosynthesis discovered for the first time in a carnivorous plant

Scientists from @SNSB and @lmumuenchen.bsky.social have found out in experiments with Pinguicula (butterworts).

Yes, we CAM! First evidence of CAM photosynthesis in a carnivorous plant
Evidence for weak, facultative CAM is reported for the first time in a carnivorous plant, i.e., in Mexican representatives of Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae).

Happy to see this one out. We did a phylogenetic analysis of African Sesuvium using herbarium collections and genome skimming. We assembled ~9000 loci from orthologous genes identified from transcriptome data. We also described a new species! 🌿 #evobio #iamabotanist

Excited to see this one out! We inferred a new backbone for Astragalus with a custom bait set and found some interesting things. This is the first ms of PhD student Daniele Buono that I have the chance to advise at LMU. More to come! #evobio @aaronliston.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Building a robust backbone for Astragalus (Fabaceae) using a clade-specific target enrichment bait set
With over 3100 species, Astragalus (Fabaceae) has long fascinated botanists as the largest genus of flowering plants. With an origin in the Middle Miocene, Astragalus has one of the highest diversific...

Here's a starter pack for early career researchers in evolutionary biology. I prioritized the most-junior folks, and this list quickly filled up with undergrads, grad students, and postdocs. Might do another list later, but I'm tired. Have fun everyone! 🐒 #evobio
