There shouldn't really be soot anyway. It's likely adjusted wrong, it hasn't worked since I moved here, that's another project.

Having a soffit vent going into the living space didn't seem right to me. Cold air just gushes in around the fireplace. The metal vent is pretty standard for these, it's double walled, sucking in fresh air through the outer tube and exhausting out the inner. These things don't get that hot.
