Shaping how we learn, teach & discover in the age of AI | Professor & Researcher @Georgetown exploring human-AI teaming | Advisor | Views my own
What makes us irreplaceably human? Bumper stickers:

Deep expertise to challenge when AI's wrong
Empathy to build human connection
Moral compass to ask should we? with purpose

The future isn't resisting or embracing AI blindly, it's staying human while leveraging its power

In @fortune.com, Miriam Vogel and I propose two critical steps for US AI leadership:

1. National AI literacy initiative — empowering Americans to recognize and effectively use AI in daily life

2. AI "black box" incident reporting systems — turning failures into industry-wide improvements

U.S. AI firms, take note! An op-ed by @sambresnick.bsky.social and @colemcfaul.bsky.social in @barrons.com argues that China's "good enough" AI strategy (think DeepSeek) could disrupt the market.

It's about affordable tech. Huawei playbook 2.0? Open-source Chinese models are closing the gap, fast.

Testing "explainable AI" isn't as simple as it seems. After reviewing 81 papers on AI recommendation systems, research shows most only test if systems are built to spec, but skip crucial real-world effectiveness testing.

We need both. Time to raise the bar.

Attended @cnas.bsky.social event on AI & homeland sec last night, led by Carrie Cordero, w/ DHS Sec Mayorkas discussed AI adoption.

Idea that came up: Make NIST resources more of a gov-wide asset. Also, got claim check 404 for my coat, glad I found it! 🤣

Led great discussions at the National Security Innovation Forum last week.

A few ideas:
🔹Need more public stories like Maven Smart Systems
🔹Implement "Kill Bonus" for non-performing programs
🔹Incentivize COs/civil servants driving innovation
🔹Help companies properly value opportunities
