As an audio engineer I agree. Even something like audacity is a better option.

Set your gain for your loudest lines and record at 48khz 24bit. The dynamic range of 24bit will allow you to manipulate the volume in post without worry. Whispering is as much mic technique as it is acting( just get close to the mic) Echo is much more than I can explain here in 200 characters.

It's freaking crazy to see that VAs need to know how to act, mic technique, record, and be an audio engineer. VA work and audio engineering are necessary but asking the talent to do it is such BS.
