I realize that probably all felt like a pile-on, and I was responding more to the phenomenon than to you specifically, but I appreciate that you read and replied!

I don't even like poetry that much and would have struggled with 4 weeks of it, but I will defend to the death the concept of fucking around learning weird shit in college. humanity as a whole benefits from having a populace educated in the arts! have some curiosity!!

5. calling poetry "low utility" fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between capital and art. humanity has a high demand for art and corporations make a ton of money on poetry, storytelling, and human expression; they just don't share any of it with creators. don't blame that on poetry!

4. learning for learning's sake is fun as hell. I minored in french and wrote a 10-page persuasive paper against the death penalty for my french composition final. I learned about filmmaking through electives. that shit makes me more interesting and interested in the world around me

3. I struggled through literature classes because symbolism is a tough concept for me, but as I matured I was able to reflect on those dormant skills & understand (partly) what things mean in art and media, & I at least grasped that messages have subtext whether or not I myself can see/understand it

2. people say they don't use skills like algebra in the real world, but have you ever thought through what you currently have vs. what you want to have and figured out what you still need to reach your goal? baby, that's algebraic logic whether you remember the formulas or not

1. I have a math degree and spent most of my time solving mathematical proofs. I work as an accountant and don't use or remember any of those mathematical skills. but I sure as hell retained the overarching lesson of all those proofs, which was how to apply logic to any problem
