Though, don’t get me wrong, the messages media portrays can be unintentional. But the point is that these messages, intentional or not, are what you must analyze. The effect they have on the world is based on what it is *saying* about the world. What it shapes you, the consumer, to believe

Both affect reality, but one is in a way that is worth questioning because of what effect it is trying to pursue. It’s all about the intent of the media. Saw isn’t pursuing the intent of making someone a serial killer, it’s pursuing making you feel scared, or disgust at the violence

The affect is it makes you laugh. But then the violence in like, military movies, is very different because of what the intended message is. Usually it glamorizes the violence, praises it. It’s not telling you to laugh, it’s telling you to idolize the military and that military violence is ok. Noble

I agree, it’s all heavily dependent on what the media wants to say. What is the message? Fiction affects reality in that it tells you something. When you’re watching Tom and Jerry, obviously the media is not telling you violence is cool and fun, it’s saying cartoon violence is fun and silly to watch
