Around age two. It can vary; some of the larger breeds aren't adults until they're three or four years old, but looking for a medium sized dog, the ones who are between two and five years old may suit your family very well.

Labs are lovely (my partner has two), but honestly a shelter dog, particularly a young adult rather than a puppy, might be your best bet. Young adults have settled into their personality and aren't so prone to chewing on everything but are still playful.
