Desert gremlin. Hair cutter. Former muay thai coach. Mixed indigenous 🇺🇦🇲🇽. Hate how many interests of mine i share with people i detest.
Its crazy because this opportunity happens EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND on ufc cards and fighters rarely take advantage. Its a ring cutting tactic you get taught your first year training in strict muay thai gyms.
Sopaj is pressuring his opponent agains the fence, he resets to give allow him to circle only to punish his exit with a head kick.

I literally don't have words to describe how angry it makes me that while I watch the news and worry if my Abuela and tio are gunna lose their house and these mfs are worried about looting. ACAB includes the DAs that get to choose to prosecute. Fuck every cop. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.

The DA of LA county and the captain of the Sherrifs dept. Just got on the news to talk about how they're going to arrest and prosecute looters. Half the fucking city is on fire and you're talking about fucking looting

Davey Grant might be my favorite salty dog in all of mma since Matt Brown retired. So many fighters could learn from watching his striking and he truly does not get his due respect

It feels crazy to say this, but as of right now; Lamine Yamal's play is as important to Barça as Vini Jr is for Madrid, or even as Rodri is for Man City. The kid is a fuckin DIFFERENCE MAKER

Like the whole concept of widening stance for mma to defend takedowns but also teaching leaping in and out of range is like... do you actually care about defending takedowns or is this just "mma style" shit instead of functional MMA

A lot of the issues I have with mma striking are just the reality of the sport and its many facets. But some of it is just cultural. Like I would go to mma gyms and the way striking coaches just immediately parrot things they were taught like it's gospel is wild

Not spending every waking moment in a muay thai gym anymore has made me less of a muay thai purist in a lot of ways. But when I watch mma fighters strike I still think it's esthetically way less beautiful than pure muay thai.

But he will also be unbelievably fun to watch against most matchups because he is so skilled and intent on violence. I don't think he beats Merab in a rematch. But against virtually everyone else at BW, on any given night, he can look like the GOAT. Love him or hate him, Yan is fun.
Overall Yans game will always frustrate people who see the scope of all of his individual skills. The reality is, fighters aren't video game characters that can just put more points into attributes. Yan will very likely always struggle against fighters with great distance management
The only time Yan has an active jab is when he is hell bent on extending combinations. Otherwise he can't consistently land hard jabs.

His need to touch with his lead hand would seem like a perfect way to set up a stiff jab and lead to kicks from the outside. But unfortunately, for Yan, it seems that the minute he doesn't have contact with his opponent he becomes far less ready for what is coming his way.

While long guard is far less effective with 4oz gloves in terms of blocking strikes, it works for Yan as a tool to feel if he is safe to move forward into trips, clinches, and takedown. Or to step all the way out and reset. Unfortunately this makes it very hard to ha e a consistent jab

Why does he go back to long guard? FEEL. I wouldn't be surprised at all if I found out that Yan had eyes similar to Gaethje or Do Bronx because once he leaves that tactile range, he is immediately worse defensively.

The reason that part of his game is so good while his long range striking game is somewhat paired down and unreliable is because he doesn't have particularly good reactive defense. He is sound fundamentally so he will hit a pull or slip counter but often goes back to his long gaurd.

This is because when Yan feels where his opponent is, he has good enough proactive defense (head movement and footwork) that he is comfortable throwing whatever he wants once he knows where the opponent's weight and direction are.

Petr Yan is one of the best and most violent transitional fighters mma has ever seen. His ability to throw and land hard strikes off clinch breaks, standups, and off the fence is something we don't see very often

If you like cool breakdowns you should follow @ryanawagmma.bsky.social
But I'm here to talk about how, in my opinion,Yan's greatest skills are directly linked to his biggest weakness.

Really need mma fans to understand that looking good on pads, mitts, drilling l, or even sparring is not an indicator of someone's abilities, poise, and fitness

Whattup ya fuckas. Petr Yan looked great this morning. Meaning he will look confused and annoyed while losing another lopsided decision to Merab
