So even in an alternative universe without IBM PC, Microsoft with Xenix would have been a strong candidate to dominate the market. And Windows would be based on Xenix there.

But nobody offered a cheap Unix for the masses: Microsoft was more interested in its cooperation with IBM and gave their Xenix product to SCO.
SCO and the other Unix vendors preferred to address the high-end market with hefty price tags and big margins.

Interesting thought. CP/M and it's multiuser sibling MP/M were operating systems for 8-Bit-computers with floppy disks, it would have taken substantial change to make them fit for the future: hard disk, 32 Bit, etc. DRI completely failed on that.
The "next big thing" back then was Unix.
