100%. There are much more clever and interesting ways of creating conflict and drama in a story. It feels lazy and predictable.

Congrats on getting back at it! I need to schedule time to just draw. I get into the trap where I feel like I need to do something productive, and then where's nothing left to do, THEN I can relax with a sketchbook. But there's always something else, so I never get to the drawing bit.
