Unknowingly, many survivors feel a magnetic pull—either toward abusive personalities that echo past harm, or toward “wound-buddies” who share similar trauma. These are different dynamics, but both can confuse pain with connection. See Attraction 'About this Mission' gentlefatherjournal.wordpress.com

“What it took to find my Voice”
Decades of Silence
At age eight, I swore myself to silence. It lasted until 42. Finding my voice took decades… but it was worth it. Your support of my WordPress blog could help me reach Survivors who still struggle. gentlefatherjournal.wordpress.com

I want to apologise. My Substack was suspended again. I don’t know the reason, but I respect platforms protecting children. I’ve moved my writing to WordPress so I can keep sharing openly and safely. gentlefatherjournal.wordpress.com

It’s not just trauma. It’s addiction, self-harm, suicidal ideation, hypersexuality or sexual shutdown and chronic illness. The list of consequences appears to be endless. That’s why I speak. That’s why I wrote Not Knowing. More on: derekolivier.substack.com

“1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys Conti. Still, both advocacy and research communities agree: the data is incomplete. An estimated 30% of cases go unreported, and silence continues to cloud the full truth. More on: derekolivier.substack.com

“1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys are sexually assaulted” is often shared in survivor-led spaces. Wherever possible, I rely on peer-reviewed studies and government reports—sources that tend to offer more conservative estimates..... derekolivier.substack.com

The Silence Is Global
These are not rare stories. They’re hidden ones.
They cross borders, languages, and generations.
And still—we barely speak.
It’s why I wrote Not Knowing: A Father’s Story.
It’s why I speak now.
Not to shock. Not to campaign.
But to offer truth. And connection.

The Silence Is Global
UNICEF (2024) estimates that 650 million girls and women alive today were sexually abused as children. That’s 1 in 5 globally.
The World Childhood Foundation confirms: 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 7 boys will experience sexual violence before age 18.

The Silence Is Global
The scope is vast.
The data is incomplete.
And the silence is profound.
A 2025 meta-analysis in JAMA Pediatrics reviewed nearly one million children across 80 countries. It found:
11% had experienced sexual harassment
9% contact sexual violence
6% forced sexual intercourse

Survivors may be one of the largest unspoken demographics on Earth. Yet the topic remains taboo. We just don’t talk. I wrote a memoir to speak calmly and truthfully about what it's like to heal, hoping to make it a little bit easier for other survivors to recover. Free on derekolivier.substack.com
