My new Nepenthes rajah x mira from California Carnivores, plus representative photos of the hybrid's parent plants. My pitchers are 5 cm / 2 in high.
A red open pitcher above a closed orange pitcher with red speckles. The orange pitcher is newer and should open within a couple weeks. Nepenthes rajah in situ on Mt Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. It is deep red with a green interior, a wide peristome (rim), and domed lid. This species has the largest recorded pitcher size in the genus, 3.5 L. My Stylidium debile, a (proto)carnivorous plant endemic to coastal Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. It's called 'fragile trigger plant' because the flowers smack insects to deposit pollen. The pollinating structure in this photo is at the 2:00 o'clock position of the flower.

My Pinguicula 'Razzberry Blonde' flower beginning to show its yellow and raspberry petals. This is about 4 cm / 1.5 in. tall. You can zoom in to see the mucilage that traps insects on the leaf surfaces. I was surprised to discover it on the flower stalk and bud as well.
Flower bud on the verge of opening. The carnivorous leaves are also yellow and raspberry mixed together for an overall bronzy effect. Mucilage droplets glisten on the entire plant.

My Nepenthes 'Lady Pauline' x hamata 'Tambusisi'

Nepenthes (maxima x talangensis) x hamata 'Tambusisi'
Tropical pitcher plant with red and yellow mottled pattern. The peristome (rim) of pitfall trap secretes nectar to lure insects. It's dark purple, with hooks or 'fangs' from which insects fall into the pitcher. The lid above the mouth is a disk with indumentum ('hairs' made of plant cells).

My unidentified Nepenthes (tropical pitcher plant) from a local plant store. I think it's a 'Lady Luck' hybrid, N. ampullaria 'red' x ventricosa. The pitcher is 5 cm / 2 inches tall. Behind it is an unidentified Mexican Pinguicula, possibly a 'Weser' hybrid of P. ehlersiae x moranensis.
Bright red pitcher 2" high, with a wide peristome at the top of the pitfall trap. The plant secretes nectar at the rim to lure insects, which fall into the pitcher. The Mexican butterwort has pale green rounded leaves which blush pink in strong light. They secrete a mucilaginous substance to trap insects directly on the leaves. Digestive enzymes break them down, leaving behind their exoskeletons.

Irises in our back yard, with arborvitae in the background. I zoomed in on these for the shot, but there are many more blooms along the back deck.

Trichonephila clavata, jorō orb weaver. Yellow and black colouration, with red spots on underside. Females have a leg span up to 4 inches. Genus is native to Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan, and has been introduced to the USA.
