From spring planting to fall harvest, the garden reminds us how growth takes time and care.

Just like our trips in the Airstream, these are choices about how we want to spend our lives.

How do your values shape the way you use your time and money?

When working with clients, we can encourage growth mindset by reflecting and affirming their effort rather than their ability. In Motivational Interviewing, these are called affirmations. Highlighting effort reinforces the belief that change is possible; and within reach.

People say "fake it until you make it," but you don't have to fake anything. You just have to start.

In the nature vs. nurture debate, fixed mindset leans entirely on nature; who you are is who you’ll always be.

A growth mindset, on the other hand, assumes both nature and nurture matter.

Growth mindset looks at challenges with curiosity:

“I’m curious to figure this out.”

“I wonder why this is difficult for me.”

What would it look like if you started adding "yet" to every "I can't"?

A fixed mindset assumes skills and talents are static—you’re either born with them or you’re not. It sounds like:

“This isn’t for someone like me.”

“I’m not the kind of person who can do that.”

“I’m just not good at this.”

At its core, a fixed mindset is about giving up when things get hard.

The tricky part about a fixed mindset is that it isn’t all or nothing. We all carry a mix of fixed and growth mindsets, and the fixed side often sneaks in when we least expect it. The good news is that a growth mindset is trainable.

We all know the feeling: You read something inspiring or attend a great workshop, and then go back to your regular life, unchanged. The spark fades. Nothing sticks.

If you don’t implement, you can’t fail. You also can’t fall short, or do it “wrong.” Learning feels safe. It can even feel virtuous. But the real growth happens in the messy middle—where knowledge meets practice.

Knowledge matters. You can’t facilitate deep planning conversations without a strong foundation in communication skills, behavioral finance, and psychology. But knowledge alone doesn’t transform client relationships.

You have to do something with it.

Hiding behind learning is common; especially for thoughtful professionals. We want to do things right. We want to feel ready. But if we’re honest, sometimes “I’m still learning” is code for “I’m not doing.”

You don’t learn to ride a bike by reading about it.

You learn by getting on, wobbling, falling, and trying again.

It sounds obvious, but in professional settings, many of us forget this.

This is the knowing/doing gap.

When life throws something unexpected, there are different ways to react.

Some try to control it.

Others walk away.

But some pause, reflect, and respond with intention. This way—the reflective, adaptive path—is how we improvise while still staying true to ourselves.

When it comes to learning something new:

The path isn't flat...

Or Smooth...

Or Predictable...

It’s not about perfect progress. It’s about staying in the process long enough for your subconscious to connect the dots so when the moment is right, your conscious mind can catch up.

Understanding the nature of learning helps us persist through the plateaus. If you expect slow and steady growth, you may give up too soon.

And that’s the danger: giving up just before the insight.
