“PhD-level intelligence”—I feel like I don’t know what they think intelligence is. A PhD is a form of specialist expertise; it’s not about vague smartitude.

Both Republicans and Democrats appear to agree that the US government should do what it can to require other countries to "buy American," as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) put it at Thursday's hearing. Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) went further, calling for a "tech NATO." Sen. Cantwell said she favors "the five most sophisticated democracies and tech nations setting the rules of the road and saying, this is who you should buy from.

Seems like he’s saying very clearly that his votes have been about *him* and some abstract sense of not liking to be told what to do rather than any concern with the actual policy/outcome of the vote.

I wasn't any different than the 30 or 31 other Democrats who signed the bipartisan letter in 2017 that was sent to Mitch McConnell begging him not to get rid of the filibuster, OK? And then there was only two of us left as soon as Joe Biden won in 2020. And then 2021 comes. What happened to the other senators? I didn't change. They changed. So they keep looking, "Well, you got to do this." And I said, "No, I don't. I really don't, and I'm not going to." Cottle: So it was a statement of sorts. Cottle: So it was a statement of sorts. The headline is not a passive construction, it’s possibly worse: it’s active voice, but frames the target of the bigotry as the agent (softened with a mealy mouthed “may”). THEN it does indeed deflect Trumps responsibility even further by using the term “instinct.” So yeah—it’s some bravura enabling
