I woke up when the train stopped in Lviv. Or I think it was Lviv because it was the only scheduled stop. Outside was pitch black and I heard the air raid sirens for the first time.
The next stop was Kyiv with the providnytsia waking us up about 1 hour before arrival

Shortly after entering Ukraine the train stopped and soldiers entered for an inspection. Had to show my passport again but there were no issues and we were on our way.
The bed was cozy and warm and the monotonous sounds of the train quickly lulled me to sleep

I watched some videos on my phone, and got ready to sleep after checking out the carriage.
The trip was around 10 hours overnight. The lights on the train were all turned off. Outside everything was turned off as well. Airstrikes

I offered to stay on one of the top beds to the eldest lady, which she accepted. My ticket was for a bottom bed but I noticed it was not easy to climb to the top ones, especially for an elder lady.
There was tea and coffee offered and soon after the ladies were in their pajamas and in bed.

They had to take the train like everyone else. No other way in.
The train departed at around 20h I think. In my cabin there were 3 Ukrainian ladies chatting. Fortunately one of them could speak english and my native language which was helpful.

and asked in english what I was doing there. I simply said "visiting". He looked at the blank passport for a few moments more, gave it back to me, gesturing me through not looking very pleased

Arriving at the Ukrainian station there was a huge queue. All women and children. Most with large suitcases. They were all pretty much fast-tracked inside, but I had to go to the "foreigners" queue. The customs officer looked at my brand new and empty passport for a few moments

I found a little stand that was selling them at €5 with unlimited data. I thought it was cheap and a little sus, but I had no other options. The truth is that the SIM card worked with no problems at all

I opened the box and it was a small snow globe souvenir featuring a cathedral inside. A gift for someone close. They all laughed as I held the adorable thing, the tension dissipated and the soldiers left. I packed everything back, not without feeling a little embarrassed, but happy to be on my way

They pointed at it and said something which I interpreted as "what's that?". I took out the apparently suspicious little box. Everyone was staring at it intensely and I felt like they were holding their breaths waiting for me to open it

The 4 bed cabin was suddenly much roomier.
The soldiers then asked (ordered) to see my luggage. Or rather they pointed at it and said something which I interpreted as such. It was just my backpack filled with clothes, a laptop and nothing out of the ordinary but they did notice a small white box

So after that there was me and two other men left in the cabin, both locals and as always none of them spoke english. Then armed soldiers came to check our papers. They escorted one of the men out after looking at his papers. He never came back. Men under 60 weren't allowed to leave the country

The lady didn't seem too happy about it and I think she talked to the providnytsia to place her somewhere else. The providnytsias are ladies that take care of the carriages, checking the tickets, serving tea and afaik what they say is the law :)

I would name her Elaria. I imagine she can summon glowing white patterns across the waters. Her magic can raise or calm storms, help heal the oceans, or simply guide a lost sea otter pup back to its mother. Her power comes from deep inner peacefulness and harmony with the sea.

Of course the experiment had to be yet another *thought* experiment. At least the article's got this part right: "but 100 years later, scientists are still none the wiser as to how the two can be unified". Sorry if I sound salty
