It also benefits those with social capital disproportionately- eg in Stockholm ppl getting flats via their social network and/or by trading. Im still attracted to the idea though despite everything as it can give footholds to working & middle class families in otherwise totally unaffordable cities.

I mean, his closest adviser used to go to Putin’s press pow-wow every single year. Plus there was all that hanging out with the bhoys in the 80s, press call in front of the Black September guy’s grave, inviting Hamas to parliament but refusing to stand on stage with Cameron during Brexit ref…

Higher level PIP also pays (indirectly) for people to have access to a basic car, when uk car ownership rate is 80% and is a standard cost for most households. Its weird that this has never been reformed.

Yeah universities were prioritising outreach to white working class boys back in the late 2000s.

I remember Gonclaves saying that the BLM protests were permissible to reduce the wider, long-term public health effects of racism - the exact opposite of his covid messaging. This is the point i started zoning them all out.

A week or two before public health Twitter was going nuts over the Michigan statehouse protest, and that was like 50 people. There was a clear double standard.

Biscoff has really been on a journey - from the cute biscuit you get with your coffee to: ‘crumble it up and put it on a streak’.

Skills uplift without the accompanying infrastructure or industrial policy - blanketing LearnDirect centres in pit villages means you have a lot of Windows 2000 power users there, and not much else. Also worth remembering that Industrial Policy was a dirty word for almost 40 years.

Pakistani brits have now largely taken up the same bogey man role that Afro-Carribean brits had in the 80s-90s, and the Irish had further back. Unlike those groups they generally haven’t become less visible with intermarriage, so the right will be able to push this stuff more or less indefinitely.

Anglo universities are a different world compared to the mostly pile-em-high, sell-em-cheap EU university sector. For that tempting 1k euro fee you’re getting 200+ class sizes and one course textbook in the library for them all to share. Still mostly better value than 9k a year though.

One of the most difficult things i found working alongside radical types in my trade union was that they’d get as angry about any proposed solutions from management as they did about the original issue. Sometimes this was ideology, sometimes just couldn’t mentally give up fighting.

Also many high-earners who were very well-off during ZIRP (the online services they chronically overused were being heavily subsided), and now they’re merely well-off.

My point isnt that people have it easier than they think (many/most dont), but that doomerism is perhaps most widespread amongst people who are among the winners of the last 30 years.
July 27, 2025 at 8:48 AM
We have the doomerism every time we go back to hometown but all our families have big houses and go on like 8 holidays a year. Very disorientating when someone you know is saying they’re broke cos of COL crisis and next thing they’re dropping 1k plus on an Oasis concert.
