“You know, there’s a reason I don’t tell people much about myself, Ben. This… ” She taps her pen off the table, tiny dots of blank ink marring the steel. “This is the reason.” “I don’t know what to say.” He turns to her, raising his arms to the side in a helpless gesture. “I knew it was bad but this—” “Is it good enough for the program, or not?” She lays the pen down and clasps her hands between her thighs so he won’t see how her hands have balled into fists to stop them shaking. Ben drops his head, unrolls the now-crumpled application form and stares at it with a down-turned mouth that wrinkles his chin. Every awful thing that happened to her is laid out on those twisted pages. “No,” he says softly, lifting his face to look at her, “It’s not good enough.”

(I wasn't kissing about the edging) 🤭
He flicks it open, pulls the leather loose in a wide arc. Her breath comes faster and her body flips over, righting itself against the bars, holding tight as she watches him over her shoulder. He loops the belt in his fist, once, gives her a look that is nothing but heat and anguish, and adds a second loop. “Omega.” His eyes widen, panicked by her answering sharp whine. Quickly, he slips the loop over his head, brings both hands high behind his neck. His biceps bulge as he feeds the steel through the buckle. She watches him force the thick leather between his full lips. Her neck aches in warning. His jaw strains wide. His teeth clamp around the bands and he flexes his neck, testing, before he strides forward. Muzzled.

Part 3
Violent heat pulls taut along her spine. A sound comes from her closed mouth, a mewling she doesn’t recognise as hers until he shushes her, soothing, reflexive. She can’t keep her hands locked around her knees anymore, limbs stretching, moving with the flow of her blood and her lymph. Dimly, she recognises this is the wrong thing to do, that she should fight against it. But he’s watching her do it, leaning forward with a hunger that sparks around her. “Rey,” he says, and his jaw is so tight that her name sounds odd. “Can you show what you need?” The whole room stinks of restraint. Her sluggish thoughts provide an answer: Ben is stalling, trying to figure a way out that doesn’t exist. Hoping that this will pass shortly enough for him to keep himself in check. But she’s been watching him for days; the feral way he moves, the curve at the edge of his lip when she surprises him with something amusing in this dark place. This won’t pass quickly. “Ben, stop.” She can't take this burning ache for hours while he tortures himself with watching. “Let's pretend.” His head tilts but he’s still gripping the bars. “We met at a coffee shop,” she tells him, “we've been dating for years and this is your place.” She pauses for a small sniff, tasting his confusion. “It's a bit bare, Ben, you should buy some furniture.” A strangled laugh erupts from him and there's a victorious fizzing inside her when his scent spikes hot around her. “Come here.” She reaches out one pleading hand. “I’ll bite you.” His fingers curl around the bars, holding tight, panting through a clenched jaw. “You smell fucking perfect.” Her body reacts before he's finished speaking, an ache so heavy it feels like falling. She jams her hand between her legs, squeezing her thighs around her fist. The tremors in her arms and legs wrack through her. “Alpha.” It’s tinged with urgency, a scraping, hollowing desire. He bows with it, dips his chin with a grating sound that rolls his chest, battling himself. She watches him lose. His body unfurls. He stands tall, rolling his shoulders back. Her eyes follow from his black boots, up the line of ripped dark denim over thick-bunched thighs, to a ridged stomach. His hands are at his belt.

Part 2
His scent swells around her, honey-thick with rage, and Rey stops breathing altogether. The bare bulb shadows the dense muscle of his back, the movement as he wrenches the metal drawing her eye over and over until she has to squeeze them shut. Her lungs pump, straining for air, body rocking against the gritty concrete. She pinches her nostrils closed, jamming her palm against her mouth. “You sick fuck,” Ben snarls with a growl so threatening it should freeze her solid. The bars rattle, manic. “I will fucking kill you.” Her knees shift, pressing tight. She holds her breath, even when the brightness behind her eyes dims and her muscles loosen into darkness. But her body betrays her and she comes to with a dragging gasp of cold air that fills her torso with his scent. Deep, sharp, a tang like burning sweetwood. Warmth spreads outwards from her center and she can feel every tiny hair along her neck and arms. Her moan is drowned by Ben’s wordless roar. There’s a final clash of metal as he grips the bars, pressing his forehead to them. “Ben.” Her voice is guttural, defeat braided tight through her. “You smell so good.” He doesn’t move, fists tight around the bars, veins raised with clenching. “Please.” He says quietly, and it takes Rey a moment to realize he's not talking to her. “Please let her go.” Rey could take what anger did to his scent, but fear has turned him acrid, the wrongness of it sharp under her ribs. Her thoughts turn murky, a layer of dark velvet that makes her anxious. She can feel his name like a swelling in her throat, hot and moving. She tries to curl her fingers around it, swallowing against her palms, breathing through the sultry tenor that moves her hips. She presses at her neck until the word surges from her mouth. “Alpha.” She watches him bend at the waist, neck twisting like he’s trying to tear himself away from his own body. His lips are pulled back, teeth set together, damp hair falling to cover his eyes entirely. The air around her spikes, souring like pain. “Sorry,” she moans, miserably pulling herself further up the mattress, away from him. “I’m trying but I need–.” He shakes his head with a sharp grunt and when he looks up, there’s an animal shudder through his torso. “Don’t.” He leans forward to grip her ankle, shockingly gentle. He pulls her back to the center of the makeshift bed, away from uncomfortable press of the bars. His voice is soft and calming. “None of this is your fault.” He takes his hand away, rubs it over his jaw, and his eyes widen, then darken. He pushes back from her.

I refuse to apologize
Ben has folded himself into the corner of the cage, as far away from her as he can get, with his knees drawn up to his elbows and his head between his hands. She can hear his teeth grinding. She lies on the mattress and holds both hands over her mouth and nose, forcing her breath into shallow, barely there puffs. Rey has been so cold for days, wearing nothing but Ben's borrowed shirt. But now, her body warms in shivering waves. She can feel the ache already, the nearness of him. When her stomach twists, she curls into a ball and there’s a flurry of movement from his side, the clang of iron as he strains at the bars of the door, growling in frustration. “Let her out!” he roars into the darkness.

His side of the glass should be mirrored opaque but he’s staring directly at her. Rey tests her theory, moving to her right. His chin tilts to follow her. The restraints pull his shoulders back, lines of sinew stretched taut, skin still wet from the suppressant shower. It can’t be comfortable, but he shifts down in his seat, spreads his knees wide as if he’s settling in to watch a film in a recliner instead of a steel chair bolted to the floor in the centre of a bare, soundproofed, room. She stops, moves back to the centre of the viewing window, and his eyes crinkle at the corners. Underneath the muzzle, he’s grinning. The skin at the back of her neck tingles. “Increase security,” she snaps into her radio. “His pack will be coming for him.”

More minutes pass, and she doesn’t disintegrate. Ben holds his breath. The wind will have to take her because he’ll sit here until he starves before he lets her go. The first movement drags a sob from him. He tries to hold her tighter, a split second of awful realisation that this will take her from him. But his hands don’t crush through her. They press against solid skin with a layer of ash sloughing away. The hope that’s coiled tight inside him flares outward, followed by a round of fear so fierce it shocks him. The breath he takes is so huge it moves her body. Her slim, firmly muscled arms, the ridges of her spine, all caked with a layer of death, burned away. He swipes gently at her jaw, and the ash falls to reveal her tanned, freckled skin. “Please,” he whispers, checking for a pulse in her neck. When he finds the steady throb of her blood flowing through her arteries, all his softness vanishes and he scrubs at her face, pushing off the dead dust. “Rey, please, open your eyes.” Her nose scrunches, and he remembers all those morning training sessions, how he’d have to wake her with a cup of coffee circling slowly near her head or risk a neat fist to his jaw. He’d take it now, he’d take a punch or a kick or anything, anything if she’d just be here, whole again. It feels like hours before her breath comes in and she blinks awake. Her eyes dart from his to the window, widening. “It’s day,” she says, and smiles.
