I’m just a middle-man.” “Middle-woman.” “Well, it’s a very man-dominated industry, so I’m better off calling myself a man.” “I write for a major tech blog, so I get it.” “I’m actually working on getting my skills together to switch over to an engineering role,” Cora went on. “It’s way more fun.” “Dude, software engineering,” Diana said with a hint of wonder. “You must be super smart.” “Eh, I’m not one yet. The more I learn the more I realize I need to learn.” “’True wisdom comes from knowing that you know nothing.’” “Are you quoting Socrates or Bill and Ted?” “Both.” “I knew I’d like you,” Cora said with a soft little chuckle. It was one of the sweetest sounds Diana had ever heard.

“You noticed it, didn’t you?” Svetlana asked with a sparkle in their eyes as they walked. “The way she worked? You felt it.” “I . . . yeah, I did,” Evelyn said. She didn’t know what it was that she felt, she didn’t even realize that she felt anything at all. Now that Lana mentioned it, though, it was there - a tingle, almost like a wave of static electricity through the air. “That’s it. That’s all it is. She had them all in the palm of her hand, and she made them all feel welcome. She made them all feel -” “At home.” “So . . . ?” Lana prompted. “Home is a people,” Evelyn realized. Svetlana smiled proudly and walked along. “Aha, so it is. I knew you would be the easy one.”

A rudimentary lathe (tool for working wood as it spins really fast) made out of a power drill clamped to some 2x4s.

There used to be other things that existed, but somehow she couldn’t really remember what they were. The nature of the universe was a six foot sphere encompassing two women and a thick cloud of gay panic. “Are you here because you’re lonely?” Diana asked, grasping for conversational purchase. “Well I am here,” Cora said, as if kicking Diana’s hand from the cliff edge. “That doesn’t answer my question,” Diana responded. “Yes it does,” Cora teased softly. “You don’t seem like a very lonely person.” “I’m not, for the right person.” “So you’re waiting for the right person?” “Not anymore.” “I’m actually-” Diana started. She was finding that it was hard to talk to someone when her mind was so foggy. It turned out to be harder still when someone’s mouth was pressed to hers. The universe was now made up entirely of a pair of lips and nothing else.
