Image of galaxy M77. M77 is one of the largest galaxies in the Messier catalog. It is located in the constellation Cetus at a distance of 45 million light-years from Earth. M77 has an apparent magnitude of 9.6 and is visible in a small telescope. It is most easily observed during December. Initially identified as a nebula by the French astronomer Pierre Méchain in 1780. Both Messier and Méchain were comet hunters who cataloged nebulous objects that could be mistaken for comets. Messier, Méchain, and other astronomers of their time mistook the M77 for either a spiral nebula or a star cluster. This mischaracterization isn’t surprising. More than a century would pass between the discovery of M77 and the realization that the ‘spiral nebulae’ scattered across the sky were not part of our galaxy but were in fact separate galaxies millions of light-years away. Photograph of DU's historic Chamberlin Observatory at twilight. All DAS "Astronomy Nights" start with a DAS lecturer’s informative, multi-media astronomy presentation. Astronomy presentations are designed for visitors of all ages and may be illustrated with colorful computer graphics, videos, and other audio-visual methods as appropriate. After the presentation, visitors may be treated to telescopic views of the moon, stars, star clusters, planets, galaxies, and nebulae, all through Chamberlin’s historic, 28-foot-long, 20-inch-aperture Alvan Clark-Saegmuller refracting telescope (weather permitting). On cloudy nights, visitors can view and learn about the telescope and receive a tour of the observatory, which includes its various clocks, the meridian telescope, the library, wall displays, and an animated video display of the night sky for that month. DAS volunteers will be happy to answer questions about astronomy, astronomical observing, and the observatory.
