I moved away after the name change to PP. I know exactly zero people who thought the change was a good idea, and also zero people who don’t still know it as Alaskaland. It was silly and a waste of $ to change it then. It’s probably a similarly silly waste of $ to change it back now.

The just-passed BSA was a compromise that fell dramatically short of inflation since the flat funding started (around the time my kids were born). Fully funding last-year’s BSA is nice. But they really need to boost it to make up for inflation already lost, and index to inflation going forward.

The river views up there are cool - but growing up on Farmers Loop, I preferred a view that had Denali.

Also - don’t miss -25°. Or -40°. Or colder. Every time I come back to Fairbanks in the summer, I miss it. Every time I come in the winter - I’m content to stay in southcentral.

Nice. I’m back up to Fairbanks for a quick weekend visit. I’ll watch for you if we stop by Fred Meyer - when in Fairbanks I always run into people I know at Freddie’s. ;-)

It’s not just rural Alaska where they lack competition. For certain services (wired connections to the internet, landline phones) they have an absolute monopoly in large chunks of urban Anchorage… like my neighborhood.

Pollock? The fish? Is a profanity? I didn’t realize the Alaska Fishing Report on @alaskapublic.org was so racy.

Surprised the snow load is that meager hiking along Turnagain Arm right now. I expected to see mostly snow with patches wind-blown clear. Instead I’m seeing mostly dry land with small patches of drifted snow. Cool that you got to hang out with the sheep like that!

It was pretty long. I noticed it. Commented on it to my wife. And then it picked up the pace and really shook.

Yeah… it was definitely big enough that my mind was going through the “am I in the safest spot, can anything fall on me right here” mental math.

The contents of my spice cupboard and china hutch are not on the floor - so it was not quite as big as 2018 at my house. But it was big enough that I could comment on it… and then it picked up the pace and really shook.

Big enough that I felt it while sitting in my car.

Maybe better for the long term, but the details in the article are weird. Saving $ by reducing property tax expense? If true, it’s because they remove a property from the tax base, and add that amount to the assessment of everyone else. And a convoluted lease back? Why incur that expense? Weird.

Alaskaland/Pioneer Park parking lot. Not free, but way cheaper than an RV park or hotel.

If you go late enough in the summer, the Fair there is fun without the over-whelming-ness of the one in Palmer.

If you have time to head out to Chena Hot Springs, there are some fun hikes along the way (Granite Tors and/or Angel Rocks).

Pioneer Park/Alaskaland - ice cream, carousel, playgrounds, mini golf, the train… it can be a day.

Hot Licks - the nearby playground can easily take an hour+.

CanoeAlaska is run by a family we knew from the church Ken & I grew up in - their rentals and logistics support are great.

The alliteration to end that second paragraph is almost poetic.

My daughter (the words, not the pic). “Flat funded education since I was born.” It is kind of amazing. Our prison spending keeps up with inflation. State construction contracts have inflation factors built in. Yet we ignore inflation and decry throwing more money at it when it comes to education.

The tracker idea is awesome. I see events posted on the local and statewide subreddits, often after the fact, but occasionally in advance. Since you are adding past events to the list, last Sunday 3/2 there was a well attended and well received pro-Ukraine protest at the midtown mall in Anchorage.

Pretty astounding that Pearl Creek is on that list. I was exactly one grade too early to go there when it opened. My little brother did though.
