I was saddened to learn that Marina Lewycka has died. I read a Short History of Tractors (and later Two Caravans), such sensitive writer. I was returning to Liberia, working on the forest sector reforms, the Liberia Forestry Initiative.

The closing firework display -last evening- for this year's "Fires de Sant Narcis" was notably more colourful and less thunderous than previous events. Noisy (explosive) public firework displays sit uneasily with the (nearby) wars in Gaza and Ukraine.

Tokyo, Mar 1945, after the firebombing. Politicians and their military acolytes continue to learn nothing and forget nothing. And we enable them.

I've bought a fair few for myself, to gift (and to replace those that somehow were not returned). From today's shelves.

This is also a good starting point, published by OUP in 2000. Harold Scheub makes the point that it is just a sample.

but inspite of the conditions there were still plenty of smiles, and do you find a nicer class of cyclist from the mid-field to the back. And they still had 85 km to go!

But it began to rain and get slippery at the front runners passed...

This is the first proper and fast downhill section, very technical for the braver cyclists, who were flying here yesterday.

A pleasant Sunday morning walk up from town to watch the Traka 100 km close to Puig Estela (378 m).

Today is the Traka 200 km event: here the elite women's group after 15 km and 300 m of climbing from the start in Fontajau, Girona, and passing through the Gavarres forest landscapes.

Chapeau!

Using the Merlin Bird app, I heard the European Robin & Serin; Eurasian Wren, Blackcap, Blackbird, Blue Tit & Nuthatch, plus the Great Tit, and on the upper slopes the Short-toed Treecreeper, which hang out in the Cork trees. There were quite a few Wood-pigeons too, the only birds that I saw!

Walking in the Gavarres above Girona today, you can see the difference the recent rains have made. The Riera de Palagret is flowing well, here next to the Font Alau.

Watching the Rally Costa Brava 2025 taking place in the hills above Girona is - for a few hours albeit in the cold and rain -a great way to put aside the political nonsense of Trump and his acolytes. Among the historic cars the Ford Escorts stand out, simple mechanical fun, and fast.

Icy winter blue skies just above Girona. This was yesterday, much needed rains expected later today. The effects of the drought haven't gone away. Overall Catalan reservoirs are only at 30% of their capacity.
