Stede’s wardrobe was a hatbox. Two hatboxes, each stuffed to the brim with waistcoats and cravats and trousers and more, all carefully folded or laid flat. Ed brought them up to his cabin, along with a dinner tray, pretending he needed to go over charts and couldn’t join the crew in the galley. He wasn’t ready to share Stede yet. Ed picked up a slip of something that was softer than soft, and held it to his cheek. “Is this silk?” Stede looked up from a pile of stockings. “Oh, no. That’s actually a rather exquisite cashmere.” “Rather exquisite cashmere,” Ed repeated. “Oh! Do you fancy a fine fabric?” “I think maybe I do. I have this...” He dug out his square of crimson silk, the one he’d carried, hidden away, for decades. No one else had ever known it existed. “Something my mum gave me, when I was a kid...” “May I?” He passed it to Stede, who took it and folded it, from bedsheet to pillowcase size for him. Then he smoothed a hand over it. “It’s lovely, Ed.” “Bit old.” “Sometimes old things are the best things.” “You can have it.” “Oh no. I couldn’t.” “I want you to.” “We can share it.” “As what?”

Lonely Stede!
The last thing he did before boarding was finally called for his flight and he went on wifi mode was to open a tab for the latest Blackbeard fic, posted that morning. He'd been waiting for this all day. He made sure to hit "entire work" and to keep the page open. Trudged up the steps, shuffled along to his seat, stowed his bag, settled in with his airplane pillow, and stuck his face in his screen. He barely noticed the plane taking off, hardly said a word in greeting to his fellow passenger. He just started to read, and that was it, he dropped right into Blackbeard's world. Soaked up his word choice, his voice, his humour. Barely even blinked back his tears as they began to roll down his cheeks, quietly and steadily. Everyone had their favourite authors; everyone identified with one or both of the leads on the show, Raven or Mermaid, and at least one of the secondary characters. And the way Blackbeard wrote about them...Stede didn't actually see himself in the Blackbeard fic version of Mermaid, not the way he did in other fics, or his own stories. But the way Blackbeard wrote about their relationship... Every single time, about a third of the way in, Stede would come across a phrase–so simple, so innocuous–and it would awaken the *longing* inside him, and the tears would flow. Blackbeard must have someone truly special in his life, someone kind, to be able to write such love. To make kindness sexy. To speak of forever, and mean it. Stede longed so much for that, it hurt.

I can lend you a toothbrush, pyjamas...” “Is this an upstate thing?” Ed chuckles. “Fang wears pyjamas, too, these cosy flannel things. I’ve never slept in anything other than my boxers.” “Does he? I always thought it was a me thing. The appropriate outfit for every occasion. Sleepwear is a fun way to add to my wardrobe.” He shuts up at the sight of Ed, gone wide-eyed again. “Sorry. I—” “What’re you apologising for, mate? Come on.” Ed cuts across the hall and grabs the newel post, swings up onto the staircase. “Let’s see this wardrobe.” “Okay, well...” He flicks off the lights downstairs and leads Ed upstairs and down the corridor. “My sleepwear is actually in my auxiliary wardrobe, the backup to my actual wardrobe.” “Mate.”
