I have been having this argument with journal editors recently. Gave one the example “ I have just seen a large blue butterfly that wasn’t a large blue butterfly.” Not only does it sometimes not make sense, but it makes it far harder to scan text for a particular species.

Green Woodpecker?
Possibly a thing by 1836 Curtis’s description of Ornithomya fringillina lists where his specimens were, although he doesn’t refer to them as types, so maybe a bit later before the concept really developed?

If you find any flat flies from this or any other year they will still be most welcome even if they are a bit dried out or damaged!

Yes, please. Bat flies are part of the same national recording scheme (Hippoboscidae and Nycteribiidae) that I run with @flygirlnhm.bsky.social

I don't know if the talk will be recorded, but I'm speaking at the Dipterists Forum Meeting in Cambridge the following week and I think they often record talks. It will have a slightly different emphasis (flies rather than birds) but will basically be the same content.

I think they are probably darker than you imagine, a lot are being described at the moment and I suspect a lot are undescribed in Africa, South America and on islands. Here's an example doi.org/10.1016/j.ij...

It came up with Fungus Gnats for me, but I would prefer to live on a warm blooded creature like one of the Hippoboscidae (a taxon which is probably so dark that the quiz maker had never heard of them)!

If you are ever able to collect some, I would love to have them. Or if you know the bat fly species records in iRecord would be great.
