Amazing panel @americanuniversity.bsky.social w/Laura Field on her groundbreaking intellectual history of #MAGA. There is tension btwn new right and evangelism. I have no tolerance for idea that we are on a degenerative path. Even Nietzsche did not believe in a "last man" ala Fukuyama

So I do not miss the Marion Barry years. And I am definitely not looking at data suggesting the deployment of troops was a good idea.
From today's Washington Post.

Trump designated #Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern alleging widespread religious violence against Christians - Join us this morning for a briefing organized by the brilliant folks at AfriPAC. #humanrights

Trump threatening to attack #Nigeria, after designating it Country of Particular Concern for allegedly undermining religious freedom. This is an excellent way to alienate one of America's most important allies in Africa. African Union urges ongoing intl cooperation for its complex security threats

Just think: we live in a country where school buses are used to separate parents from their children without due process. Earlier today a 12 year old here in DC was handcuffed as his parent was taken away. Remember when the GOP talked about "family values"? This was 13th Street Northwest just now

Abolishing govt agencies established by bipartisan law. Profiting off crypto currency to sell access to White House. Destroying #ruleoflaw by telling atty general who to prosecute instead of following the facts. Happy to see huge #NoKings turnout for #DemocracyProtection and #humanrights here in DC
October 18, 2025 at 6:23 PM
#NoKings #FreeDC huge turnout today to protect democracy from the rule of law for rule by the people.

Congratulations to my friend and colleague Amitav Acharya on his new book "Once and Future World Order" - decline of western hegemony does not necessarily mean increased global instability. He argues that peaceful multipolarity has emerged many times in world history.

State Dept no longer comments on quality of elections. @freedomhouse.bsky.social is worried because this is a top 5 indicator of #democratic #erosion. Also gone from annual #humanrights reports: prison conditions, right to fair trial. Congressionally mandated sections being neglected
October 3, 2025 at 5:40 PM
State Dept embracing a philosophy of natural rights which implies that human rights comes from western, Christian civilization -- deliberately excluding others. Foreign govts that Global Engagement Center used to cooperate with now see the US as a major propagator of misinformation.
October 3, 2025 at 5:22 PM
Adela Levis - all US govt efforts to counter #misinformation and malign influence are gone. Not just GEC at State, also DNI, FBI etc. No one in USG is pushing back against authoritarian propaganda anymore. Counter-terror programs studying violent extremism, or domestic white supremacy, gone.
October 3, 2025 at 5:15 PM
Democracy #HumanRights & Labor at State Dept lost 80% of staff. Our role was to advocate for human rights as American values. Those voices for indigenous rights, disabled rights, protecting religious groups, now do not exist in USG. Expertise on corruption, elections, are gone. Not about efficiency.

Do you remember when Hatch Act violations were subtle and something that politicians actually tried to hide?
October 2, 2025 at 2:23 AM
The State Dept no longer collects data on freedom of association, and abolished GEC, office charged w/defending America against foreign malign influence. Join us on Friday at @americanuniversity.bsky.social at noon to discuss impact on global democracy. We moved to a bigger room due to high demand!

Great fun to catch up with Kingsley Moghalu, one of Africa's great economists, yesterday in my department. We revisited his contribution to my Oxford Handbook of #Nigeria Politics, and discussed the state of liberalism, causes of inequality, and supply chain vulnerabilities.

Thrilling to dine (and even dance!) with our newest cohort of students pursuing our MA in Global Politics, Economics and Security (GGPS). It's been a while since I enjoyed proper Nigerian food, and it was a tremendous honor to have the Ambassador so engaged. Excited to get to know these rising stars

Here's one of my favorite pictures from this great gathering! Very exciting to meet the new students, ready to dive deep and prepare for the many global challenges ahead. And great fun to play the song "Teacher don't teach me no nonsense." SIS is no nonsense! :)

Self-governance. Due process. #HumanRights. Protection against arbitrary search and seizure. #Democracy and decency. No taxation without representation. Demands of #FreeDC are lessons for other cities in Trump's sites.
