Re China, they have also done things not in their best interests, eg culture revolution plans. I personally believe Chinese nationalism is understated -- yes money matters, but many of them also think we are only about the money.
I think, only IMO, Russia is gambling, much like Hitler did.

I have some Indian friends. The General feeling I get from them, rooted in their past, esp from the division with Pakistan, is quite anti Western and friendly to Russia. Many are proud of Modi, many like to respect their leaders. He has tried to walk both sides, but history weighs a lot. Imo only.

Sadly -- tho just my opinion -- I think that it is wishful thinking. Many in China and India would like to see a change in the world's structure. A loss of trade might frustrate, but they would likely brush it off with thoughts like we deserved it. Russia would spin it too, that's their forte.
