For my people still actually programming, please, use a fucking debugger. It sucks but it's so fucking important. Not that it would have solved the cloudlfare thing, but I'm of the opinion that not enough people use debuggers in this day and age

For the record I haven't looked at or worked in assembly for over 25 years. I haven't done anything in C in about 22 years, and I haven't done anything in C++ for over 20 years. Everything I do these days is in Python, R or heaven forbid Matlab (never octave).

Everywhere I've seen talk about unwrap() going back several years talks about not not using it unless you know what you're doing and stresses not using it in production. Which someone at cloudflare did blog.cloudflare.com/18-november-...

Cloudflare suffered a service outage on November 18, 2025. The outage was triggered by a bug in generation logic for a Bot Management feature file causing many Cloudflare services to be affected.

I bring this up because I'm hearing a bunch of whining about Rust, Re: cloudflare outage and Internet downtime. It apparently came down to some code written in Rust, using unwrap().

Rust is apparently memory safe, which is a good thing. Being memory safe removes a known barrier that takes years of experience to be good at. However, being memory safe is not a replacement for competency and experience.
