Is our society an intellectual club? No. Only people with a lack of understanding of actual life of an average person would force others to read just for the sake of reading fancy words. And what can you do if you don't get the same thrill from a story as they do?

Maybe. But is it a strict requirement for being a decent person? Don't think so. You can build your own worldview without a single book-written thought and come to a same conclusion as author.

I agree on artistry. For some reason those kind of arts tend to be the sost detailed (which makes it even more uncomfortable). I understand the themes of not being in control paired with a pinch of fear that boosts excitement, but still, why death out of all?
