Associate professor @liigh-unam.bsky.social. Interested on theoretical population genetics and developing new computational methods to understand our past. He/him/his.
And also happy to see @psyduckresearch and @valenomics from our group giving talks at #SMBE2024

During dinner a lot of people were asking: "Where is the after party?". It is tomorrow at 9am. We have a great set of talks on new approaches to estimate demography and natural selection. Symposium organized with @valenomics #smbe2024

"Community Engagement Experiences of the Afromexico Genomics Project" by @paleogenomics .

Our group will have a strong presence at #SMBE2024 . Two students will be giving talks and another three students will be presenting posters.

We had a strong presence in the "Días Académicos" event held the last couple of days @LIIGH_UNAM . We had poster presentations by Sebastián Iturbe and Abad Guzmán. @AlanIzarr and @PsyduckResearch gave talks.

Congratulations to @valenomics on getting her bachelor's degree in Genomic Sciences after defending her thesis today. She has been leading two projects during her senior year in collaboration with @emiliahsc and @mashaals . It is an honor to work with this rising star.

Some members of the lab and I found Darth Vader. We also enjoyed a "Millenium Falcon" pizza.

Congratulations to Earth's version of the Hero of Time, @hctoralessandr , for getting his master's degree by developing a new method to infer how natural selection acts using temporal genetic data. @nintendo decided to release the new Zelda game the same day he got his degree.

I'll be at #ASHG2022 showing @AlanIzarr 's work on inferring the distribution of fitness effects by leveraging the ancestral recombination graph. I'll also be giving seminars at USC, UCLA, Brown and Penn State in the upcoming weeks.

We had visitors from @UCBerkeley and @INMEGEN this week. @dianaguilr and @andrewhvaughn gave two fantastic seminars. @dianaguilr talked about her work on identifying the genes that determine the pigmentation patterns of a species of frogs in Central America... (1/N)

Congratulations to @AlanIzarr on passing his oral qualifying exam and becoming a PhD candidate. It is an honor to have you in our group. Next month he will do a research stay in @ras_nielsen 's group at Berkeley thanks to the generous support of the UC MEXUS program.

We had the honor of hosting a virtual seminar by @Johri_Parul in the @LIIGH_UNAM . Super cool work on new methods to perform joint inference of demography and the impact of purifying selection. Thank you for sharing your work with us!

Mañana daré una plática sobre el trabajo que estamos haciendo en mi grupo para inferir la fuerza de la selección natural actuando a lo largo del genoma.

Today in the popgen journal club @LIIGH_UNAM we started reading John Wakeley's amazing 'Coalescent Theory: an introduction'.

However, it is possible to differentiate between advantageous and deleterious variants in other demographic scenarios. This includes a population expansion scenario. In this scenario the allele frequency trajectory of deleterious and advantageous variants are very different.
November 16, 2024 at 4:24 PM
In line with Takeo Maruyama’s results, we find that it is impossible to know if a variant is advantageous or deleterious conditioning on the variant having reached a certain frequency in the population. It is only possible to infer the absolute value of the selection coefficient.
