Riley answered, also looking up, but aside from the domed ceiling of a secret research lab deep inside America's most famous monument, there was nothing out of the ordinary. "Someone's coming. They're stepping on the vines." Her eyes twitched. "Four, five people. I can't tell. We need to move. Riley, can you get us out?"

"I'm open to suggestions" Abby laughed. Riley smiled too, she was finally opening up a little. "So, how did you find out?" "I... lived in Iowa. I just moved here a few months ago, before that I lived in Des Moines. I was on the track and field team. Running, and I did swimming as well. Still do." She put her fork down, and recalled that fateful day in August 2009. "So it's raining, and I'm just about to break my personal best on the hundred yard sprint. I get into the blocks, and I run. Faster than I did before. By the time I can reach the end of the track, I've shaved a full second off my time. Great pace. But then, I slip, fall onto the track, face down in the mud, scraped on my knees." "Ouch." "Yeah. And I don't even get up. I just lie there, exhausted. My pace was ruined anyway. Eventually I get up, slowly, walk to the stands, wishing I was just at home, in the shower, and then I was. I experimented a little more after that, and I can teleport to anywhere I've been before, or that I can see."

"Didn't know you smoked," Abby said, keeping her voice soft. Marigold let out a dry laugh, more exhale than amusement. "I quit. When I left home." She stuffed her hands into her jacket pockets. "But right now? I just… needed it. Don't tell Sadie, she'll rip my head off." "Does it help with your power?" "What?" "Smoking, I mean. You control life, right? Healing, growing plants, and smoking is… kinda the opposite. Does it balance it out or-" Marigold stared at her for a second, then snorted, raw and tired. "No, dude. I'm just fucking exhausted. It doesn't do shit for my power. I'm smoking because I'm stressed out of my god damn mind, and because I needed *something* to keep me from screaming so loud they evacuate the entire monument." She shook her head, a faint, bitter smile tugging at her lips. "You're overthinking it."

I’m sorry I couldn’t wait for you any longer, but I fear that with one more karma portal placed this dimension will collapse entirely. ELIZABETH (V.O.) I know what he wants to do. I know why he came back to the core. He’s after those who buried him alive in that lighthouse. ELIZABETH (V.O.) I have to warn them. I have to get to the fifth layer. I wish you could follow me but I have only one rescue pod left.

Inside Autumn's treehouse, everything seemed to float. Books drifted by in lazy circles, and a few blankets hung suspended in the air like laundry on an invisible line. A small desk was bolted to the floor, covered in star charts and weather reports. The walls were lined with polaroid photos, but unlike the ones in Sadie's archive, these were all of the sky - storms, sunsets, strange cloud formations. "You can sit," Autumn said, gesturing to a chair that wasn't actually there. As Riley hesitated, confused, she felt an invisible force gently push her up until she was floating at sitting height. "Sorry. Sometimes I forget normal people need actual furniture."

That being said, with issues like this, it's generally best practice to assume the worst. Even in 1995, when the web was in its infancy, experts were saying this.

"She" Marigold said, a little annoyed, sniffling, "is trying to put your broken ribs back together. Hold still, damn it."

Louise stopped by one of the larger pines, its bark rough and scarred. She reached out, her fingers brushing the trunk, and froze. The air shimmered, sharper this time, and Abby's stomach dropped as the echo took shape. Men and women in uniforms - park rangers - moved through the clearing, their boots crunching the snow. Behind them, others in USGS jackets carried equipment: seismographs, sample kits, cameras. One ranger pointed at the treehouses, his voice low but clear. "Someone's been here. Look at the construction. Too deliberate for squatters." A geologist knelt, scraping soil into a vial. "Readings spiked last night," she said, her tone clipped. "Same pattern as '98, but stronger. We need to get this to Vassos."

Could have been worse, but still... I did that." The floating objects settled back down as Autumn regained control. "After that, everything changed. The other students were afraid of me. The teachers too. My parents... they tried to understand, but how do you explain to your daughter that she can control gravity?"

"As much as I like her, Jesse's houses would not have survived the storm last night." They continued walking, and Abby found herself relaxing despite the drizzle and the long trek ahead. There was something comforting about Jacob's precise observations and Sadie's steady presence. It felt... normal. Almost like a school field trip, if your classmates happened to have superpowers. "Your friend Riley visited Autumn's treehouse last night." Jacob said suddenly, but not in an accusatory way. Abby almost tripped over a root.

As the night progressed, the storm got worse. The wind howled through the trees, making the whole structure creak. Riley tried to focus on her sketches, but her hand kept shaking with each thunderous boom. She'd never liked storms. They reminded her of Iowa, when she was home alone when her dad was working late, terrified and alone in her bedroom as tornado sirens wailed outside.
