Li is the gold standard for BD, but it has a narrow therapeutic range and can affect your kidneys. It doesn't blunt me compared to Depakote and Depakote isn't good at managing the depression. Lithium is also neuroprotective and encourages the production of BDNF. I wish you luck and peace.

How bad are the side effects?

My psychiatrist had me increase the dose slowly to minimize the risk of getting the rash. He also took my off Depakote and put me on lithium. My doctor told me Lamictal helps with the depression, but it's poor for arresting mania. When I became manic they put me back on Depakote and mania stopped.

I co-facilitate support groups from NAMI. I've always believed that those living in recovery are some of the most resilient people I've known. I have Type I bipolar and honestly I don't think I'd be alive if I had a dual diagnosis. You're strong and are doing life great!

Perhaps meds aren't right for you. I'd consider looking into ketamine, TMS, or maybe even medical marijuana. It took 14 years before my psychiatrist put me on lithium and it saved my life. I knw psych meds help immensely, but it may be the time to ask your provider for alternatives.
