Yes, I do know Kerr’s work and agree. He’s interesting on the repression of a thread of robust vulgarity in Japan’s history (though I’m a Tanizaki fan and that vulgarity is a reason I love his work). And he’s good on buildings.

David Dyer’s Kingdom of Dust - an alternative history of the Apollo 11 landing with bonus Norman Maileresque journalist character, alongside Buzz and Joan Aldrin - is the most enjoyable Australian book I’ve read this year (just out).
