The question is how they acquired them not where in the world they are. When Britain first laid a claim to them they were uninhbited.

Specifically, prior to 1904, Japan and Russia each owned 3 of the 6 Kuril Islands. In the 1904 Russo-Japanese War Japan took the 3 Russia owned islands, and in WW2 Japan asserts they gave back only the 3 they got in 1904 but Russia asserts Japan gave up all 6 and currently occupies all 6.

They pretty much spent all of the money the Empire generated on the military forces required to stop the British from stealing that money.

And then the British blew up their navy, stole the money anyway, and their colonies all broke away.

To be fair everyone kind of forgets that Spain was a colonial power because they lost their empire before the 2nd industrial revolution even kicked off.
