It also helps a lot to see the "genealogy" of programming to understand why modern syntax works how it does. Learning assembly (especially manually managing registers) gave me some big lightbulb moments in college.

It's complicated, but tldr is that it's a tone indicator. It generally indicates the comment should be read as less serious, either comedic or melodramatic.
