As someone who actually passed the Commando course, I would point out that it's not easy. Apart from the physical aspects it's a huge sense-of-humour test. And it checks whether you will put the team ahead of our own interests. So, for those being a bit judgemental about this: yes he is a failure.

It's only fair that a right-wing politician, in the pay of the USA, that supports Israel & Argentina (as well as the use of force to enact regime change in Venezuela) and wants the USA to have access to Venezuelan oil reserves should be overlooked in favour of someone who is . . . .

So energy independence means they've gone from being dependant on Russia to being dependant on Finland, Sweden and Poland. It will cost them more but obviously it's a price worth paying.
