I'm in Oatlands in Tasmania as artist in residence at AiRSpace Oatlands until the end of November. I open the gallery/studio most afternoons. Do pop in if passing or local.

Artwork by Deidre Robb. I read, listened, and watched to learn more about peace while making this work. Peace is not a simple thing. What some people experience as a time of peace, others will know as a time of oppression, persecution, or exploitation. History warns us to beware of the uneasy faux peace that is devoid of truth, reconciliation, justice, freedom, or healing. I wish for a world in which all people can feel safe in their daily lives. It is beyond my powers to bring peace to the world, but I can try to find peace within myself and live peacefully with others. This work is constructed using gentle textiles used to care for wounds (gauze swabs) combined with embellishments used in celebrations. For the Western Australian Fibre & Textile Association's latest exhibition, they didn't ask for statements. We simply gave titles and viewers need to work it out for themselves.

My partner did some sneaky planting in my part of the garden. Last week we had to cancel our trip north to see wildflowers due to storm damage to our house, but now our own garden is looking extra special.

I had an art night out in Perth with a friend I hadn't seen for too long.

I bumped into so many people, heard an excellent art panel discussion, saw a fabulous exhibition, had some dog love, and bought my partner a present. Now I'm listening to music on the train home and trying not to whistle.

On this residency, I was finally able to hang another (huge) collaborative community artwork.
Many drinks, cakes, and chats were enjoyed around this tablecloth. Conversation snippets were then recorded by experienced and learner stitchers.

A photograph of a collaborative community artwork made in 2024 by textile artist Deidre Robb with people from the Western Australian town, Waroona. The base is a well-worn vintage embroidered linen tablecloth. Numerous words, phrases, and images have been stitched onto the tablecloth. These are records of conversations held around the tablecloth where residents of Waroona discussed what they loved about where they live and things that are special or unique to living there. The new stitched work uses a wide variety of colours and handwriting styles. The tablecloth has also been mended using a variety of visible mending techniques to cover holes and stains. The form of this artwork is like a signature cloth, which is a well-known type of historical textile. The words "Country life is Better than City life" are embroidered onto a vintage linen tablecloth. Alongside the words are drawings of a tree and grass, which have also been stitched over. The words "I love my family" are embroidered in green thread onto a vintage linen tablecloth. The outline of a hand is stitched in lilac coloured thread. The word "friends" is embroidered in red thread. The dot above the letter 'i' is formed like a love heart. There are also two flowers (which are actually repairs to holes) stitched in yellow and orange threads.

I've been visiting a school and teaching children to sew as part of my residency with #NorthMidlandsProject
While making joyful rosettes, the children learned basic stitches and how to sew on buttons (and sequins!)
I loved hearing them declare, "I can sew!"
