I liked reading when I was growing up, but I knew plenty of kids that didn’t. I think that with social media, YouTube, TikTok etc, there are a lot of things out there that kids are interested in but not many of them involve reading.

I think this here is your answer: they didn’t read. You gave them the tools and opportunity to read, but they didn’t use them. I still remember how I was in seventh grade; if I didn’t care about it I avoided doing it.
