Degrowth is not “zero consumption”. Do some proper reading before you misrepresent degrowth. Degrowth is a reduction in consumption AND production with a very specific purpose: bring society back within planetary boundaries.

You are confusing degrowth with austerity. Degrowth is the opposite of austerity.

Core countries must also start returning the massive amounts of wealth they appropriated from the periphery.

Fast fashion must end ASAP. Petty producers in the periphery should produce for local needs at fair, non-extractive wages. Next: massive land redistribution and investments in land augmentation for agroecological production.

If we consider the theory of imperialism from Utsa and Prabhat Patnaik, income deflation in the periphery happens when there is economic drain (unequal exchange). Stop the drain, allow the periphery to develop and it will not suffer loss of income.

When we talk about averages, the "more for the needy less for the greedy" always translates in reductions of production and consumption, on average. The more we zoom in the more nuanced degrowth becomes. But it's more than just reductions. The growth-imperative itself also needs replacement.

Why not? It's exactly the perfect framing because it describes precisely what is needed.

To “recognize this truth” means not only understanding history, but seeing how it continues to operate through global supply chains, military domination, climate inequalities, and even the green transition (where mining and land appropriation again occur mostly in the South).

The ‘status quo’ to many westerners is an uncomplicated state of life, where we get to keep living the existence we’ve chosen, without interruption. We go to work, the car keeps moving, the TV streams, and none of the atrocities directly affect our lives.
