Fun fact: This is legally true in the US due to bodily autonomy laws requiring doctors to comply with patient requests to keep their removed body parts, so long as there are no extraneous factors like health or safety. One guy made tacos with his leg and shared them with his (consenting) friends

Hmm, yeah. I agree. There shouldn’t be this assumption of “you ARE your label”. I like labels as far as having something I can type into Google when I’m having an identity crisis lmao, but yeah let’s throw away the stupid Box that it comes with, yuck.

OKAY I KINDA RAMBLED SO. Just to be clear, I support you and your Abolish the Labels take. So I’m not arguing against you or anything! I just like sharing information and perspectives.

When a group is treated like they don’t exist, the people who are part of the group also, over time, believe that those people don’t actually exist. And you grow up thinking you’re completely alone. Being invalidated by society AND having zero support I think is just as terrifying as open hate.

But on the other side of the discrimination coin, there’s erasure. Maybe with the queer community that’s not too much of a present issue, but when you take the ‘name’ away, it can be easier to forget and ignore the people who would have identified with it.

I suppose so, but personally I find it important every now and then. Like sharing my own gender identity when discussing my thoughts on it. I think that gives important context. But that’s mostly just because so much of my existence is controversial, I think.
November 2, 2023 at 1:28 AM
That being said, I do often wonder if the prevalence of misuse and discrimination and invalidation negate whatever practical benefit they potentially have. I don’t really have a stance one way or the other, I’m typically not a hardliner. There are too many sides I haven’t heard yet, I think.

I feel like they come up most often in introductions, which is where I like them best, because you get to choose which labels are associated with you. I think they can be very convenient way to get a lot of information across in a few words, like what I’ve experienced or what my views are.
November 2, 2023 at 1:13 AM
I think it’s complex in terms of how many different perspectives there are on labels, their importance, and their role in society and communication and interpersonal relationships. Like if they’re inherently good or bad or amoral or unavoidable or useful or destined to be abused. Stuff like that uwu

Ooh, I’d love to pick your brain on that topic some time. The fact that we can interact and have meaningful conversations and connections with people online even when labels are completely cast aside in favor of true anonymity; I feel like that’s telling. But its a complex topic to be sure.

Honestly, you’re so right. Gonna put them on the top shelf where they can’t reach until they learn to use them properly.

Labels are just little social tools we constructed to help us figure ourselves out and understand others. The moment they start to hurt us, they are no longer serving their purpose!

I know the gate keepers would be like “well if you’re afab and you present feminine that just makes you a girl” but like. Yeah, being put in a dress doesn’t make me painfully dysphoric, I’ll admit that. I think boys can wear dresses. But … the dysmorphia… it doesn’t go away
