Bugonia 8/10

Definitely his most accessible film and doesn't really suffer in quality or vision for it. Quite brutal and shocking at parts, upsetting and funny in equal measure.

I think it falls down a bit in the ending unfortunately. I get the message and it should be stark.

A History of Venice.

Took me a while to grind through this despite it being digestible prose. Guess it was just the scope of the book meant it was hard to become invested. The character of the city is enough just about but the most compelling parts were Enrico Dandalo and Napoleon ending things.

Really really really bizarre movie.
Clunky and stilted dialogue with incredibly wooden acting. The plot is as boilerplate as it comes with no wrinkles at all. Feels like Seth Rogan has some spare time while filming The Studio and didn't want the expensive set to go to waste. 4/10

Bring Her Back: a very interesting exploration of grief and vulnerability. It wasn't afraid to get quite brutal but never quite fell into exploitation. A lot of interesting symbolism.

Not perfect, it felt a small bit long and a couple of plot points were contrived but 8.5/10

Very much looking forward to this. He's clearly getting a bit more budget with that lead in place. Keeping it small scale and distinctly regional which is a good sign but I can't make my mind up on if smoothing out the almost tv movie like low budget stuff from his work would be good or remove charm

Also does push people in a slovenly direction.

7.5/10 Caveat
Really excellent supernatural thriller/horror. Does a lot on a low budget and in a very confined space. Very lean at 90mins and explores similar themes to Oddity, though less effectively.

Some apparent plot holes though I think they'd be accounted for with more viewing/analysis

Perfectly pleasant movie and that's kind of its problem. I feel like there was edge there it could've dove into if it wanted to be more dramatically interesting. Also it's a bit baggy and could easily lose 15-20 mins.

That said Tatum plays loveable bimbo better than most and I wasn't bored

They really do love him and mythmaking for him.

6/10

Aster clearly has tropes he likes and has done to far greater affect in earlier movies, like he has a big box of plot themes and points he reaches into for this and it just lacks impact as a result.

This casting also feels kind of slapped together, especially with the run time.
