I like to ask them if they're in danger and if I can help in any way. They usually get quiet and self conscious. Once you get them talking (if it's safe for them to talk) the answer to both questions is usually no - most of the time they're being forced to do this under threat of severe punishment.

As an Australian I take offence to that. "Yeah nah" (and its opposite "nah yeah") is part of our cultural identity!

Personally, I'm inclined to trust actual research from someone who has put the time in to collect raw data from the source, analysed it thoroughly, and then had their work thoroughly assessed, reviewed, and reproduced by their peers. That said, nothing should be taken at face value.

Most of the time if you press them, it turns out that the "research" done by the "do your own research" crowd typically amounts to a several blog posts and a couple of YouTube videos - not exactly reliable sources.

I admit I wince a little when I see it, but yeah I agree, if it's their book, they can do whatever they like to it (my eldest daughter does it to her books just to see me twitch, but they're her books...). Do it to books that belong to me however, and there WILL be a reckoning.
