Well it *is* all about the balance between determining which letters are/aren't in the word, and actually making guesses for the word (and how far one can push their luck in either direction). :P

I think context-dependent types (a la POSIX's time_t, size_t, off_t, etc) would be better.
I don't think friction from explicit number size conversions can be completely eliminated though.
