If I didn't(presumably) know any better... I'd assume that he(Syndel, but also, initially Iratu) wants them to fail...

Have to wonder if the periodic banishing was on purpose for either of them. And if Syndel keeping Iratu in the lead was more than just sunk costs or convenience.

It's hard to describe/make make sense.

I guess... the movies feel like if you took the most intense book relationship moments and amplified/compressed them. Their relationship isn't "better", but it feels less "insane".

Their relationship feels... "worse" in the movies, I find, but also more intense? More desperate? The wild, stupid things they will to do "about" each other stands out like a beacon.

They are super dedicated in the regular series, but it seems more "Shrodiger's toxic-heartwarming relationship"

Reading the series is weird. It is, to this day, has been for over 1 1/2 decades, one of my favourite manga, but that relationship(/the associated Simpsons-esq time scale) is one of the harder aspects to swallow.

I do feel "book Shinichi" would not do the climactic thing from the second movie.
