Also, to avoid that "costume" look, ignore human joint anatomy. Let the direction of action pull and bend the body and limbs in ways that wouldn't work on a something with a skeleton.

Imagine what they're "stuffed" with, to inform how their body looks. Filled with cotton? Make 'em bulge a bit, like squishy balloons. Something weightier? Imagine the extremities have some sand in them, making the limbs sag and squish toward those points. I'm no expert, but it's what I'd think of.

Man, they should bring back Zoids. Back in the day, I loved the series where it was basically a sports anime, then saw a bit of the one where it had a war and actual plot. Such good times~
