Evidently we did the math and realized we only needed 250 2-megaton bombs to carve the necessary path for passing ships.

Bear in mind not only did someone evidently do the planning, AND THE TESTING, enough people thought "hey that's a great idea" that it made A WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA ENTRY.

"...but I'm sure they wouldn't actually do that" you might say. BUT EVIDENTLY WE TOTALLY DID in November of 1952. We blew up Elugelab Island, thought to ourselves "hey this is way easier than bulldozers" and brushed the falling radioactive coral and seawater from our suitcoats.

I know it can seem like we live in the dumbest era sometimes... but I submit a 196's supplement for World Book that suggests blowing up portions of Panama to create a second even cooler canal.

"Deterrents to such a nuclear-dug canal are mainly political" claims the author.
