If they're cards you don't see yourself using and are worth something I say do it. If it's cards that you use all the time even if it's not for a couple months to years I say don't. I did the same thing and I regret it to this day. Money comes and goes but what you value matters most.

As someone who's been playing since 2014. If you want to learn the game do NOT start with commander.
It is overwhelming and way too complex for a new player. Pick one color and play any format that uses 60 cards. I recommend using only simple cards. (Hopefully your BF can whip up a couple decks).
