Focus on China - especially the environment and public health, but care about the US too. Opinions are my own.
Unfortunately, a lot of the damage has already been done. Many parents and local schools will be confused. So you can expect lower vaccination rates and less enforcement of vaccine requirements. It's not just measles. We already have an uptick in pertussis. www.vaccineadvisor.com/news/united-...

This is why Hu Bin and I argue that the constant focus in western media on China's coal plants is misplaced - they are unlikely to be used at capacity and aren't going to drive more coal consumption. The real story is renewables. foreignpolicy.com/2025/08/21/c...
China’s Decarbonization Is So Fast Even New Coal Plants Aren’t Stopping It
Advances in clean energy are compensating for new construction.

I was at the Amnesty concert in New Delhi - truly epic. Springsteen didn't come on until maybe 2:30 am. First song up, flipped his mike toward the audience and 55,000 people sang, "Born in the USA." A different time.

They've been building steadily. That's my point. They've built 58 GW in the past couple decades and 30 are under construction. And that's why the other link I gave was to an article on how the Chinese have developed less expensive ways to _build_ nuclear power plants - not just plan.

Read to the bottom of the article. There are 30 plants under construction. 10 new approvals is simply following apace.

What a horror show to have put that man in charge of anything. The documentary is very short and very good. You can watch it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybVZ...

1)The Chinese cleaned up the market super fast. That's the practice since the avian influenza outbreaks of 2004/2005, but in the process they lost a lot of specimens. 2)The Chinese don't want to deal with the illegal wildlife industry-it's profitable and people in that market were acting illegally.

The lab leak theory won't die because of a desire in the US (and to a limited extent in some other Western countries) to blame China, with a desire for specific blame-apparently the illegal animal trade is too amorphous-combined with two sets of actions from the Chinese that have added to confusion.

If you haven't already, please listen to this morning's "This Week in Virology." There's a a new paper out in Cell by a bunch of the authors of similar top quality work - Pekar, Worobey, etc. on recency and geographic origins. Basically W China - and then moved by the wild animal trade.

Thanks for reading it so we don't have to.

Prison or not is not the right question. They've had no due process. But also this thing would never qualify as a "prison" in the US. This is clear cruel and unusual punishment.
