Beholden to my canine overlords. And otherwise a stationery nerd and Associate Professor at the University of Western Ontario, working on Caesar and Latin historiography. She/her 🏳️‍🌈
A question for the Bluesky hivemind: does anyone have a particular textbook they'd recommend for a full-year, upper-level #Romanhistory survey course? Boatwright? Ward/Hechelheim/Yeo?

Alternatively: do we even bother putting a textbook on the syllabus anymore?

So much for any hope of travel to the US for the foreseeable. But how much worse to have to live under this regime. I’m so sorry, US friends.

It feels trivial, given all of *waves arms maniacally* to note that I’ve been working more intently in the last week than I have since the before times. Today is for final edits and revisions for my talk and hoping that it all makes sense.

Where I’ll be next week!
Anyone in the neighbourhood who might want to join us are welcome to come to Debra Nousek’s talk next week on "History Starts with a C: The Caesarian Corpus and Latin Literary Historiography"

Dishwasher troubles sorted, thankfully without much $. But the disruption, both mental (the stress/anxiety) and household (putting everything *back*, catching up on the dishes) is still annoyingly significant. I'll be glad to get back to the joy of research/writing tomorrow as a make-up day!

Forward progress today inhibited by homeowner problems, this time of the dishwasher variety, sigh. I've tried all the troubleshooting I know of; time to call in a professional.

Today I successfully left the house -- in the freezing cold! -- and spent several good hours at the office working on a talk I'm giving later this month. I continue to be surprised at how challenging all of this is, rebuilding and adapting to life after my partner's passing (almost 2 yrs ago).

Hello new followers!
Bluesky academics, let's get to know each other! Quote & tell me: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea/theory you aren't working on but keep thinking about.

1)Book project on the Corpus Caesarianum
2)Mapping the physical space of (say) ten legions marching in Gaul

Although the long afternoon meeting part of the annual department retreat was a bit gruelling, I very much enjoyed seeing everyone and meeting our new colleagues. Hooray for academic rituals, even (especially?) on sabbatical. Bring on the crisp autumn air and sweaters, it’s time to get to work!

Adventure time! Drove into downtown Toronto for a stationery shop sale and (especially) a nib customization event. And there’s a temptingly beautiful pen that I might go back for …

Same. Trying to change the internal messaging as I start revising a piece for gentle reentry into work mode. 🤞

*yawns and stretches* okay, I made it to the office. Now to see if I can focus on some work. #grieflife
