I’ve thought for a long time the plan was to transform Labour into a UK version of the US Democrats.
They are in denial though in believing *centrism* is popular, I remember back to the 80s & SDP then more recently ChangeUK, both failed.
The fact is centrism is not popular.

Starting a new party was not realistic, never has been. For a recent example look at ChangeUK & they had a totally supportive MSM & establishment!
I remember back to SDP& it’s a nonstarter, best to retain individual independence & work together at election time.

Although he has been a very effective & popular Mayor in Manchester, with the state of things at the moment, I don’t think there’s a safe, solidly Labour seat in the north west for Burnham to go for never mind Norwich!
