As a Brit, this just totally gobsnacks me. Our NHS is not perfect, but it's always there for those in need.

I had whooping cough as an adult. Immunised as a child but lost my immunity (for this and other common diseases). It was just awful for weeks and weeks & I would not wish it on anyone. Had booster shots for anything I needed to protect those around me.
